In the early 90s, it was apparent to me that upland game birds’ natural habitat was disappearing. Consequently, finding places to hunt was becoming more and more difficult. It occurred to me that I should try to raise birds not only for myself, but perhaps even sell some to other sportsmen. In 1992 I purchased a thousand day-old pheasants. I failed miserably. Not being one who enjoys failing, I procured another one thousand chicks. Although not a complete failure this time, it was a failure nonetheless. Most people would have given up. However, persistence paid off, and 19 years later we are raising over 125,000 healthy birds annually.

I certainly have learned many lessons over the years, and am still learning. Great husbandry has been the key to my success: the genetics of the chicks and the feeding program that I use is vital to their survival and performance. Large flight pens assure that the birds have adequate space to grow, wander and become great flyers. In 1996 we added quail, chukar in 2005 and in 2010 we added Hungarian Partridge “ Huns ” to our list of available birds.
